Week 12- Evaluation

Strategies I used in this task was, setting myself a plan which consisted of creating 1 minute of my choreography a week in order to have it completed by the studio performance with enough time to practice and perfect my choreography, however, as I have mentioned in previous blogs, this was a very unrealistic target due to me only being able to complete 30 seconds a lesson maximum, so if I were to get the opportunity to do this again, I would definitely set myself a more realistic target. So I am not stressing when I don’t hit my target. Another strategy I had while creating my choreography, was improvisation, this really helped me when I was struggling creatively to choreography to the music, this was inspired by my chosen practitioner, this really helped me as I was able to create new and abstract phrases within my peice allowing me to add them within my choreography.

Time management was definitely a challenge for me due to me only being able to choreograph 30 seconds each lesson, this put me very behind schedule causing me to panic however I overcome this by staying behind after school allowing me to get back on track with the schedule I set myself.

At the beginning of this process I really wanted to make sure my story came across clearly throughout my choreography, I feel although - looking back at my process-  I was able to portray the idea of depression through my movements an example of this would be using low and grounded movements in order to create a depressing atmosphere.

Challenges I faced while I creating my choreography, was definitely coming up with creative ideas that I could use within my choreography, to overcome this I used improvisation to the music inspired by my chosen practitioner, Wayne McGregor uses improvisation before choreographing his dance, this really inspired me and allowed to improvise to the same part of music multiple times to see what I liked and disliked. Another challenge I faced was remembering my choreography after I set it, this really impacted my time management also as it put me really behind schedule due to the fact I had to re-choreograph many parts of my dance. To overcome this I started video my creative process when coming up with choreography, this stopped me from forgetting my choreography and allowed me to move at a much faster pace.

In the future I would try making my choreography more abstract like Wayne McGregor’s choreography pieces, I would do this by getting masses of inspiration from Wayne McGregors choreography for example infra etc and try to change and manipulate his choreography. I feel although this will make my peice very different and abstract in comparison to basic and balletic.

If I had this opportunity to do it on stage I would definitely consider the lighting, costume and space. With the lighting I would make it very dark switch minimum lighting, this again is inspired by Wayne McGregor so that the audience focuses on the choreography itself. I would have a very basic costume for example a dark blue dress to really express the idea of sadness. And I would make sure my choreography uses the space of the stage evenly.

This process has taught me confidence as I found it very nerve wracking to perform a dance piece I made in front of my teacher and peers, this had allowed to to carry this confidence into all of my subjects such as jazz and ballet. This process has also taught me a lot about depression and I have come very self aware of the symptoms allowing me to help the people around me.
