In todays lesson, we each had to draw a shape onto a piece of paper which correlates to Justin’s pecks work due to him continually working on shapes and patterns during his choreography. After each person had drew their shape on the piece of paper ( which had different difficulties throughout each shape), we were then asked to correlate each shape with a different movement in order to slowly create a dance sequence with could later be developed into a choreographic technique such as a highlight or climax. We could use the layout of each shape to help us with the structure of our sequences for example numbering the shapes 1-15 and dancing in the order of which the shapes are numbered in, or we could use the position of each shape for example doing the dance move which correlates with the square downstage right due to it being placed there on the paper etc. I found this difficult as it was hard to represent each shape with a speci...

Today during class, we adventured into an inspiring choreographer named Justin Pecks who mainly focuses on the shapes and formations of the dancers in order to convey different narratives and emotions. First, we watched one of his choreography pieces called 'In the countenance of kings', as a team we came up with the idea of the female dancer (who is featured throughout) changing typical ballet stereotypes. An example of this would be the beginning of the video as she is staring at herself in the mirror however her mirror reflection is taking out her neat stereotypical bun which could further demonstrate how her reflection is encouraging her to change her normality. As a class, we also thought that this video could portray equality between the dancers as they were all wearing leotards with white trainers (making them look the same) however each dancer had a different style and colour of leotard which could further develop the idea of freedom. However, the last part of the...

Week 2 - Choreographic Devices

During this weeks lesson we experimented with specific choreographic techniques such as: -canon -unison -complementary -contrast -retrograde -reverse -inverse -improvisation around a theme -repetition -embellishment -argumentation -fragmentation -rondo form -accumulation -climax -highlight ,in order to help develop our sequences from last weeks lesson From last weeks lesson we used the same sequences from our partner work and modified it by selecting four choreographic techniques to include within out sequences in order to further our knowledge. Me and my partner chose unison, canon, contrast and highlight. From here we performed our sequence to the class, who then had to guess which four choreographic devices we had chosen. However in order for our peers to guess correctly we had to make sure that our selected devices were clear and well demonstrated, luckily our peers guessed 3/4 so to improve for next time, i would make out highlight a larger movement in order t...

Today, during class, me and my peers focused on different choreographic techniques in order to expand and develop our knowledge and understanding when it comes to choreographing our own dances. The first choreographic technique we focused on was improvisation, this is when you design sequences and movements spontaneously to a particular piece of music. I really enjoyed this device as it allowed me to be imaginative with different parts of my body, for example back bends and distortions. In my opinion, I was easily able to understand the story behind the song which allowed me to change the mood of my movements. An example of this would be slow and low movements to correlate the a depressing song whereas in comparison a happier song wold require larger movements and jumps. However to improve on this choreographic device I would ensure I have more confidence as this would encourage me to use floor work and to use a larger area of space which will further the use of larger movements and ...
