week 8 - creative task 2

At this moment in my choreography I am at 1 minute 10 seconds. Throughout this entire process I have struggled with time management. When we first started our choreography, my aim was to choreograph at least 1 minute per lesson however this has not happened due to me overthinking and rechoreographed certain parts of my choreography. This hasn’t allowed me to get as far as I wanted to in my choreographer. However, to overcome this over the next coming week I will stay behind after my school hours to ensure I am where I want to be by the time its my performance. I have used creative movement development to relate to my stimulus by using a high amount of floor and low-level work in order to really exaggerate the idea of depression and giving up. An example of this would be me standing up form the floor however immediately falling back down. From this I hope the audience feel a sense of sadness and sympathy. During my performance so far I have introduced fast continues movements which were inspired by my chosen practitioner this will be carried out throughout my dance. I have also used choreographic devices such as repetition, contrast and embellishment in my choreography so far. However, I am looking at including more advanced choreographic techniques later in my choreography such as fragmentation, climax and highlight as they will really help develop and further my choreography.

My research around my chosen stimulus has really helped me with my recent choreography as I feel as if I’m able to choreograph with emotion and understanding behind my movements. This makes them so sentimental and delicate to the audience making my piece more effective as a whole. I have also created a checklist of choreographic devices I want to use later in my choreography. This will allow me to plan my choreography ahead of time helping my time management.

In this video I incorporate Wayne McGregors style into my choreography for example his use of high extensions and different levels. This is continued throughout my choreography

My style of my choreography was highly inspired by my practitioner due to him using continues movement however still including dynamic where necessary. So, I have done the same by choreographing my dance will continues movement however if the music has as sudden beat of dynamic, I will copy. I also used his creative process of improvisation to the music to see if this would help me choreograph my choreography however I found me not liking anything was doing which lead to me not using any of that choreography. So personally, that creative process didn’t work for me.  However, to overcome this I’m going to use the creative process where each number had a set of dance moves to correlate. I remember finding this very helpful due to be having a fixed plan and the order of my numbers leading me into a creative direction. Whereas I found the improvisation daze and not reliable

  1. This is a great blog Lucy as well as the video. In your blog, you spoke about how you used a lot of dynamics in your piece inspired by your chosen practitioner , why do you think dynamics are so effective in a piece?

    1. I feel although dynamics really creates a sense of value and volume within in the piece, I fell although it also allows the audience to differentiate the climax to the rest of the dance etc.

  2. this is a great blog Lucy and I love how you have included a snippet of your choreography to give the reader a better understanding and taster of your piece.
You have discussed challenges you have faced within this task and how you will overcome them as well as your movement material linking to your stimulus and the different choreographic devices you have included.
do you feel your research has evolved over the past few weeks?
I really enjoyed watching this snippet of your choreography and I'm looking forward to seeing your final piece.

    1. My research itself I feel although hasn't evolved however with the research i had gathered really helped my choreograph the last moments of my dance and allowed to to really express my story line with movements to capture the audiences emotional attention.

  3. You have made a good start to your reflective post and have clearly described where you are currently at within your work. In relation to the criteria, I would say that this post currently sits around the 2:2 mark. For further development, discuss how your current creative process may differ to the process you used at the start of your development. I would also like you to discuss your movement in relation to your stimulus as well as your research further. Are there any examples of where your use of research behind your stimulus has added depth to your piece? It is great to know that you have incorporated so many choreographic devices into your piece. What impact have they had so far on the piece? In addition, it is interesting how you found Wayne McGregor’s process of improvising to be unreliable. Have you explored/ will you incorporate any other areas of Wayne McGregor’s choreographic process e.g. his use of visualisation?

    1. My creative process has change hugely from the beginning of the process up till now due to me choreographing to the lyrics of the music however now - I am still listening to the meaning behind the lyrics remembering ti incorporate my research- I use improvisation in order to help me choreograph my dance as I feel as though it really allows me to create new and original ideas that maybe weren't spared before hand. My movements i relation to my chosen stimulus is very grounded, heavy and dynamic in order to help me explore and express this idea of depression. An example of my research mainly lays within my movement choice for example low level movements in order to express the sadness and realization I found in my research. I have incorporated repetition within my piece, I feel although this has a massive impact on my dance due to me repeating the chorus, this has a massive impact on the audience as its a point in the dance they will recognize. In addition I have also used climax, this allows there to be contrast within my dance making it more exhilarating and exciting. I have not explored other areas of Wayne McGregors choreographic processes however if I were to get this opportunity again/ looking back at my creative process, I will ensure that i try and experiment with different choreographic processes.

  4. It is really good that you have identified how you are going to improve your time management. I also like how you have clearly shown how your chosen practitioner had influenced your creative process. Would you consider taking inspiration from other previous tasks we have done to help with your choreography?

    1. Yes I would look at inspiration form other tasks we have done previously such as the one where each number had a set of dance movements to correlate too. I remember finding this very helpful due to me having a fixed plan and the order of my numbers leading me into good direction.

  5. I really enjoyed reading your blog and like Caitlyn mentioned above, including how you are going to improve your time management really benefits this blog.
You have mentioned about executing specific movements to help your emotions come across clearly for the audience. Is there any choreographic devices you are going to include in your piece?
