Week 10 - Studio Performance

I have successfully met all the criteria required within my choreography. I have critically analysed and evaluated variety of works choreographed by Wayne McGregor, I have looked at both Infra and Wolf Works. From there, I managed to not only analyse them separately however also compare them to each other finding both their similarities and differences. Within my choreography I also used many choreographic devices such as repetition, fragmentation, highlight and climax by having a list of choreographic devices I could use within my choreography made my progress a lot easier due to it giving my a set pathway and ideas in which I could use. In addition, I also used improvisation when choreographing, this was inspired by Wayne McGregor and I found it really helped me find new ideas when I was struggling to choreograph. Within my choreography I used a mixture of both contemporary and ballet styles, in which I got inspiration from Wayne McGregor. I have also drawn a plan of where I move within my choreography to ensure I have used all spaces around me, this really helped with my creative process and it allowed to me to become aware of places I need to travel to. I have critically evaluated my choreography and my creative process which allowed to find faults and errors and has allowed me to improve and learn from these mistakes.

There were last minute adaptations in my choreography, I decided to change my climax due to it not fitting the music correctly, to help me used improvisation until I liked what I had set.

After performing my dance my tutor recommended, I use more facial expression within my piece in order to really get my story across, I’m going to apply this by finding moments in my dance where maybe I feel different to help reveal the story line within my dance. In addition, I need to find movements of stillness, this will make my choreography much more effective to the audience making them feel a bigger impact emotionally, I’m going to do this by running through my choreography multiple time to see if I can add or enhance any movements of stillness.. Finally, I need to look at cutting my music from 03:55 to 03:15. My feedback is going to make my choreography much more successful due to my story line and stimuli much clearer to the audience and the stillness acting as an emotional impact n the audience.

I’m going to create an energy graph to ensure I despite my energy wisely throughout my routine.

  1. Well done this is a great blog Lucy and your solo was great in the studio performance! You spoke about using stillness in your piece, why do you think this is effective?

    1. It allows the audience to create a sense of relationship with the dancer, allowing them to fee welcome and involved with the choreography. I think this is very important when trying to get a story across as it allows the audience to really have an emotional attachment to the dance piece.

  2. This is a very clear and well thoughout our blog, well done. You clearly mentioned the feedback you received during this process and areas that may need improvement. Was there anything in particular that you were proud of and did you find that you had any strengths that may have taken away concentration from a weakness? Well done on your choreography Lucy, your dance was beautiful.

    1. Thank you for you comment Storm! I like how I really incorporated the movements with the music due to me really listening ti the rhythm of the song. This really allowed me to hide any weaknesses within my dance for example my climax due to it have a more powerful and emotion feel to it!

    1. I have no received any feedback however I did video myself doing my choreography where I did find some corrections I gave myself, for example making sure I finish every movement before going into the next one, also making sure my dynamics can be seen clearly by the audience.

  4. How did you change your climax to fit the music better? Did you have to change all the steps or just the timing?

    1. Thank you for your comment Nathan. I had to really listen to my music making sure I was finding all the highlights within the sing, this then allowed me to add and take steps out of my climax which did not fit in with the rhythm of my choreography.

    1. I was mostly proud of how my movements correlated the movements, I feel although it really highlights and defines my movements in a more positive way, making my story line easier to portray to the audience.

  6. How did the Studio Performance create an impact on your creative process? Also how will you ensure to create the best possible outcome?

This is a well-considered post and I feel you have shown a clear understanding of the topic, I feel the work you have produced so far is possibly around the 2:1 criteria. If you are looking to progress to a 1:1, it will be worth considering the quality of your reflective skills, research, ability to answer the questions and critical thinking. By demonstrating the ability to develop plans of action and integrating received knowledge of practitioner-based processes with evidence of varied personal research as well as critically reflecting your process (showing awareness of own strengths, weaknesses, and developing ability to compare alternative theories and analytical approaches) and considering possibilities, and their consequences to develop appropriate actions, it will offer new questions for your consideration and may help you identify areas you might not have considered with within your project. Can you ensure you have evidence of these areas within your work.

    1. It allowed me to see errors I made allowing me to correct them later in the week. In order for me to create the best possible outcome, I will make sure I continually go over my dance to ensure everything is how I want it to be, an example of this would be dynamics and hitting the music on time when doing sharp and dynamic movements. I will also listen to the music constantly to ensure I know where all the beats are in the music in order to make my routine sharper and dynamic.
