Week 6 - Finalizing our choreography ideas

This week we looked at finalizing our idea for our choreography, and how we were going to portray this idea clearly to our audience.

For my final idea, i want to focus on the cogs and how they have to be arranged perfectly in order to function, however, if one cog is broken or stuck, then they all can't process and work in a productive way. I wanted to relate this to society by showing how societies normalities affect people mentally. For example how doing the same routine everyday 7 days a week can have an impact on somebodies mentality and in severe cases lead to mental health issues such as depression. Especially if they don't enjoy school or their job yet being forced to go due to socials rights and needing money to not only supply for themselves but also their family. I also want this to be the narrative within my choreography.

For my music choice I have selected three I really like the rhythm and message off as they link to my stimuli and narrative. Personally i chose pieces of music with lyrics related to my stimuli as it will help me convey emotion and a message behind my dance which will hopefully have an affect on the audience due to their being emotion behind the song. From here it will allow me to choreography in significance of these emotions making my choreography and narrative easy to understand.

In addition, the emotions i was to portray throughout my dance are:
- weak
-defenceless
-powerless
- sad
- repetitive
- trapped
I want to convey these emotions through not only facial expressions but also my movements, for example due to me focusing on depression, my movements are going to be low to the ground and small to exaggerate the idea of having now power or energy due to me being used to the same routine with nothing exciting happening.

i want to research depression in further detail in order to really understand how people feel during this horrible period of their lives. And from there how i could portray these emotions within my dance. The aim of my dance is to raise awareness for mental health so that the audience gets a further meaning and understanding of what Depression actually is and how it has a massive negative impact on peoples lives.

  1. I really like how you have included emotions that you want to portray within your solo. Are there any choreographic devices which you want to use?

    1. i definitely want to use both repetition and climax however I want the process to come natural within my dance therefore when choreographing I will look at which choreographic devices I could use for that section.

    1. inspired by my chosen practitioner, I am looking at including improvisation as my choreographic process, this will allow me to create new ideas i can include within my choreography. I am also looking at using both climax and repetition within my dance and other choreographic devices that may suit different sections of my dance,

  3. The content of this post is well thought out, and clearly explains what you hope to achieve and how you would like the audience to feel. You have included some interesting points explaining what you looked for when looking for your music, what music will you be using in your final piece? For further development consider how your research will affect your movement and how will the use of choreographic devices/ creative processes help portray your idea? How do you plan to structure your solo choreography?

  4. The music I will be using is ' You Don't Know' by Katelyn Tarver. My research will affect my movement as it will allow me to see other emotions people might be feeling, it also will give me knowledge on their body language in which can used within my choreography to really exaggerate the message. In addition I will use choreographic devices/creative processes to help portray my idea for example repetition will be a goof way to enforce the idea of self doubt. I want my choreography to be a cyclical structure meaning it begins the same way it starts with a climax and highlights throughout.
