blog- week 5 - BTUK- Lucy Imamzade

This week, we looked at the set stimuli for our choreography pieces and, in pairs, wrote down ideas we could relate to each picture.

The first stimuli we looked at was the Landscape here we came up with ideas such as the world ending/ dying due to a development in technology and power which could be a reason for repetition of war. From here we thought of emotions that may correlate with these emotive ideas such as lonely, sad, lost, isolated and empty.  We wrote down these emotions to help us create and tell a story within our dance, so it has an affect on the audience. We also said it looked very polluted and it also reminded me of the movie ‘A Boy in The Stripped Pjs’ rom here we could get an understanding of what it must feel like living during that time due to that movie being very real and emotive.

The second stimuli we looked at was a girl holding a gun, automatically I thought of stereotypes and how its unusual to see a young innocent girl holding a gun however I also think that it  due to the world being more violent and us needing protection, adults are now enabling young children to have deadly weapons in order to protects themselves from the massacre we now live in. In addition the girls behind her look very nervous as to what she may do with that gun due to her having power over them, this further demonstrates how everyone is equal however if you have something that can harm anyone or anything, you automatically have power over everything and everyone.

The third Stimuli we looked at was a man holding a camera here we came up with ideas such as only taking photos of the memories you want to keep or remember and how we get to pick a chose what memories we cant to keep or get rid of. We also focused on what her could be taking a picture of whether it would be family, friends, a celebration or decorations.  You could also look at how technology has changed in a short period of time and how things now revolved around technology!

The fourth stimuli we looked at was the brain and cogs, personally this was my favourite due to it having many connotations in my opinion. The first idea I came up with was how everything had to be perfects in order for them all to turn however if one cog was stuck or damaged the rest of the cogs would not be able to function as easily, so from a different point of view you could look a mental illness and how they are fighting with themselves due to there being complications in their brain causing them to hate themselves. You could also look at how everyday is the same, we have the same routine we all wake up in the morning for school or for work, we all go to work, we go home and have dinner and go to bed. This repeats everyday until we are not strong enough or well enough to do so. Finally, you could look how everything is programmed into our heads when we were younger for example social stereotypes etc.

The fifth stimuli were the data, we mainly focused on shapes and how everything links together, so when choreographing you will have to focus on continuation of movement and creating sharp and mathematic shapes with our bodies, we also said it looked like a family tree. Here you could discuss about generations and the different stages of life.
The sixth stimuli were pollution here we looked how the development of technology is changing our society and our environment due to an increase in carbon dioxide levels. This is damaging our ecosystems and environment causing a decrease in animal population. This is also a very relevant topic at the moment as carbon dioxide levels are forever increasing however we are not doing anything about it.

The seventh stimuli we looked at was DNA here we automatically thought of family and how family makes you feel safe and comfortable! We also thought of generations here you could show the different stages of life and how your life changes due to you learning and experiencing new things. We also noticed that the DNA was fading, again shows how slowly your life starts to fade and how life doesn’t last forever.

The last stimuli we looked at was human, here we thought of the brain slowly fading here you could focus on the loss of memory, here you could repeat movements however doing something different every time. In addition, we look at how empty and unfinished it looked this could further demonstrate how vulnerable we are to new information and o each other.

My favourite stimuli was the brain and cogs, here I want to base my dance on having to repeat the same routine every day, 7 days a week and how this can affect us mentally! From here I want to show how this causes stress and how we no longer are free to do our own activities, which could lead to continues stress and depression. I also want to focus my dance on how we have to do the same routine everyday in order to survive leading us to 0 freedom.

  1. Your blog is very well set out and I can understand the task clearly. I liked how you have developed all your ideas especially the DNA stimulus, as you talked about future generations which I personally didn't think of, however I found extremely interesting.

What decision made you like the" brain and cogs" more out of all the stimulus ?

Furthermore, this is an excellent blog as you have come up with many different interpretations on all the different stimuli's!

    1. When discussing the stimuli with my class, it was the one I had many ideas about and one I could see myself creating a dance with.

  2. You have analysed all these stimuli very well and it is interesting to see how you interpreted each one. You mentioned how you were drawn to the cog head the most, could you give an example of any choreographic devices that you are going use to convey ideas surrounding your stimulus?

    1. I will use fragmentation to show the idea of improving or failure, for example repeating the same motif however changing it to be less energetic to show a loss of hope.

  3. Did the use of group discussion have an impact on your thoughts? What other ideas and interpretations were discussed during the lesson? Reflecting back, what drew you away from the other options and towards the 'Cog Head' stimuli?

    1. The group discussion definitely had an impact on my thoughts due to it giving me more inspirational ideas in which worked better for me, rather than a few of my own ideas which did not inspire me at all. We also came up with the idea of having a set routine everyday in which was routed into our brains and if something has to change for example being fire from your job, how that could have an impact on the brain itself. We also thought of stereotypes and how especially social media has an impact on today's society and how if we don't find in with these stereotypes, it could lead to bully and mental illness. What drew me towards the cog head stimuli was the fact I had so many ideas I could had used which really inspired me when it came to choreographing.
