Week 2 - Choreographic Devices

During this weeks lesson we experimented with specific choreographic techniques such as:
-canon
-unison
-complementary
-contrast
-retrograde
-reverse
-inverse
-improvisation around a theme
-repetition
-embellishment
-argumentation
-fragmentation
-rondo form
-accumulation
-climax
-highlight ,in order to help develop our sequences from last weeks lesson

From last weeks lesson we used the same sequences from our partner work and modified it by selecting four choreographic techniques to include within out sequences in order to further our knowledge. Me and my partner chose unison, canon, contrast and highlight. From here we performed our sequence to the class, who then had to guess which four choreographic devices we had chosen. However in order for our peers to guess correctly we had to make sure that our selected devices were clear and well demonstrated, luckily our peers guessed 3/4 so to improve for next time, i would make out highlight a larger movement in order to really capture the audiences focus and attention.

The last part of class contained a list of adjectives ( positives and negatives) based on out star sign. ,My star sign is Aquarius   making me kind, caring but also a rebel. I enjoyed playing with these adjectives as they are completely different allowing me to contrast between my movements for example i used floor work and slow movements to correlate with my positive adjectives however i juxtaposed this through dynamic arm and leg lines.

Overall, i really enjoyed experimenting wit different choreographic devices and will be developing and experimenting with them when it comes to my choreography.

Video 1 is the choreography me and my partner made last week through the use of our names and hone numbers, however the second video illiterates how we developed the sequence by adding in four different choreographic devices. Finally the last video is my choreography based on my star sign.

  1. I liked how you kept the piece very grounded but still incorporated the different levels. In the beginning the back bend from lying down the sitting continuing into the backbend to standing looked really effective.

  2. You have included some interesting points and have clearly structured the content of your blog.

Please title as Week 2- Choreographic Devices

Please think about the following points:
    - More detail on the various choreographic devices we looked at during class is needed (you could insert photos of the hand-out to illustrate this – instead of listing!).
    - Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
    - Were you successful with the task set?
    - Which choreographic devices did you use and why?
    - What was the purpose of performing these tasks in front of the rest of the class?

What you have written about your zodiac task is good.

    Think about:
    - What movements did you use to portray certain qualities/ emotions and why?
    - Do you think the purpose of the movement successfully came across to the audience?
    - How did you find this creative task? Interesting? Easy? Difficult? Why?
    - How did the allowance of more time affect the final product of your phrase?
    - Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
    - What chorographic devices did you integrate and how/ why?
    - Were you successful with the task set? Was it readable to the audience?

Thank you for linking your videos in your writing, as a reader this has shown a clear connection between your writing and your videos!

This is a very good piece of writing, well done!

    1. - My strengths consisted of being able to come up with new ways in which we could change our previous choreography and adapt it in a way that our chosen choreographic devices were shown throughout. However my weaknesses definitely consisted of not being able to use the more advanced choreographic devices such as rondo form and accumulation.
      - I think we were very successful in this task and this is due to it being very interesting allowing me and my partner to both put ideas across, I really liked this as I liked hearing what my partner had to say and how my ideas differed or were similar.
      - Me and my partner used unison, canon, contrast and highlight.
-By performing our development in front really showed us how clear we made each choreographic device within our choreography, unfortunately we only managed to clearly demonstrate 3/4 choreographic devices clearly however to improve, i would make out highlight a larger movement in order to really capture the audiences focus and attention.

-I used both soft and harsh dynamics and movements to really show the different personalities of this zodiac sign. For example I would use a kick to show the chargeable and rebel personality and i would use slow movements to show the cam and friends traits.
-Yes I think my movements successfully come across to the audience due to me really making sure the audience could see the contrast of both the positive and negative traits.
      - I found this task very difficult due to you really having to show the personality not only through your facial expressions however trough your whole body.
      - Having more time would had allowed me to really nail each personality trait and find a way in which I could show these to the audience.
-My strengths defiantly consisted of using different dynamics throughout my piece to really over exaggerate these personality traits . This assisted me in this task as it allowed me to show the audience the different personality traits clearly. My weakness was definitely taking too long to come up with my choreography so next time in going to improvise to each personality trait which will hep me with my further choreography.
      - I used contrast in my choreography however to push myself further, I would look at using more choreographic devices such as repetitions, fragmentation and accumulation.
-I feel although I was quite successful in the task due to the audience really seeing the contrast in personality however to further my choreography I would link each personality trait to a different movement or dynamic to make it exceptionally clear to the audience exactly what my traits are.

  3. The contrasting adjectives in your solo piece are really effective and you have included a variety of movements - both in dynamics and levels from the floor. How would you make your highlight a larger movement? Would you do this by executing the movement differently, or by making it a movement with a higher energy level, such as a jump?

    1. I would make my highlight a larger movement by executing the movement differently, for example i would make my movements larger and more dynamic. I would also add a jump to exaggerate the idea of this being my highlight. For example a leap.

  4. There's so many different choreographic devices to use and some of them work better in different situations than others. But have you Incorporated any into your latest choreography so far?

    1. So far in my choreography I have used contrast and repetition. However I am looking to add retrograde, highlight and climax.

  5. The use of the devices you mentioned are quite clear throughout the piece but if we had to do the task again, how would you use the other, more challenging structural devices like rondo form or climax?

    1. I would use challenging choreographer devices such as rondo form in order to expand my knowledge and creativity

  6. Well done, there is a clear development in the motif after you developed the devices. You managed to include many devices in both pieces and you have also explained the task very well. Which task did you find most challenging and why? What would you try and develop if you were to do the tasks again?

    1. The thing i found most challenging was adapting and changing apiece that was already choreographed. I found this hard as we had backtrack into developing the choreography again. What i mean by this is changing set choreography into something new.
